The Manual Fix: A Step-by-Step Process

Tools help, but the core work is not complicated. Here is a practical framework for correcting brand misinformation.

Step 1: Document the error precisely.

Which AI platforms show the error? What exact prompt triggered it? What is the incorrect answer, verbatim? What is the correct information?

Screenshots with timestamps matter. You need evidence for correction requests and potential legal documentation.

Step 2: Fix your owned properties first.

Your website is the primary source AI should trust. Create a clear “source of truth” page with correct information – founding date, pricing, product features, company history.

Use schema markup for products, organization, and FAQ. This gives AI multiple ways to understand and verify your claims.

Update your About page, product pages, and any content that touches the incorrect information. Make the correct facts prominent and easily extractable.

Step 3: Clean up authoritative third-party sources.

Wikipedia articles are among the top 5 data sources referenced in AI training, according to the Wikimedia Foundation. If your Wikipedia page contains incorrect information, fix it (following Wikipedia’s guidelines).

Check Google Business Profile, Crunchbase, LinkedIn company page, and industry directories. AI models trust these sources.

In the EU, GDPR gives individuals rights to rectification of personal data. The Norwegian case against OpenAI tests whether these rights apply to AI hallucinations.

For now, the practical path is influencing source content rather than pursuing legal remedies. The legal framework is still developing.
