Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about making your content the answer that AI tools cite — not just another blue link they ignore.

Traditional SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you quoted.

When someone asks ChatGPT “What’s the best customer support software for SaaS?” you want your brand in that response. Not buried on page two of Google where nobody clicks anymore.

Here’s what smart companies already figured out: NerdWallet grew revenue 35% in 2024 despite a 20% drop in website traffic.

How? They showed up in AI-generated answers. Their content got cited. Their brand got mentioned. Conversions went up even though clicks went down.

Meanwhile, Stack Overflow saw an 18% drop in visits after ChatGPT became popular — developers got code answers directly from AI instead.

Same internet. Different rules. New winners.

What To Focus On (Without Overthinking It)

Stop trying to “trick” AI engines. They’re smarter than you think. Focus on being genuinely helpful instead:

Write for questions, not keywords
People ask ChatGPT consultative, trust-heavy questions like “What should I ask a lawyer before signing this contract?” not “lawyer contract questions.”

Be specific and clear
AI tools hate vague content. “Our platform helps with productivity” gets ignored. “Our platform reduced support tickets by 34% for teams under 100 people” gets cited.

Add real data
Link to trustworthy sources. AI engines reward content that backs up claims. Notice how this article links to actual research? That’s intentional.

Use comparison tables
AI loves structured data it can parse quickly. Notice the SEO vs AEO table above? That’s AEO-friendly formatting.

Answer the full question
Don’t make readers hunt for answers. Put the answer in the first paragraph, then explain it. Like this article did.

Where This Is Going

Some SaaS sites are now seeing over 1% of all sessions coming from LLMs. That might sound small until you realize it’s growing at 20%+ month-over-month.

The pattern is familiar: Mobile-first felt optional until it wasn’t. Voice search seemed niche until Alexa was everywhere. Video content was “extra” until TikTok rewrote marketing.

AEO follows the same trajectory — early adopters win, skeptics scramble later.

Tip: You don’t need to abandon SEO. Good AEO builds on solid SEO fundamentals. Think of it as an upgrade, not a replacement.

The Honest Take
